Engaging Families in Their Health and Well-Being: The First 5 California Parent Kit
This session will focus on how Head Start parents and family engagement staff can use the First 5 CA Parent Kit (“Kit”) to support family and child physical and mental well-being. The Kit contents align with Head Start Program Performance Standard 1302.46 “Family support services for health, nutrition and mental health” but also go beyond to provide practical advice and ideas to support common family questions and concerns. The Kit contents include research based, comprehensive information on child development, physical health, oral health, vaccinations, Medi-Cal, COVID-19, nutrition and food access, mental health, challenging behaviors and stress, disabilities, managing common early childhood diseases, early literacy, quality child care, child safety, finding services in the community and many other topics. It is an up-to-date, free educational resource kit (including shipping) from First 5 CA intended for parents and caregivers of children 0-5 and the programs who serve them. It is especially intended as a way to improve health equity for underserved families. The Kit is written in plain language and is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean. The session will provide detailed information about the Kit components, relevance to working with families, Head Start Program Performance Standards, and ordering information. Tips and discussion will provide strategies for when and where to distribute and introduce Kits and suggestions for their use such as during family goal writing, family assessment, home-based visits, parent conferences, parent meetings, and center-based home visits.
