Rafael Riva Vice President Business Development, Americas Lloyd's Register Marine & Offshore Rafael joined Lloyd’s Register (LR) in 2004 as a Ship Surveyor, working on almost all types of existing ocean-going vessels. After becoming specialized in Ships transporting LNG and LPG, he began working on the classification of equipment and components, materials; also handling project management duties for several new shipbuilding projects. Subsequently, Rafael transferred to our Marine Business Team in London. While there, he enabled several top clients to overcome their increasing operational, energy and environmental challenges. In doing so, he played a major role in helping them to comply with the marine industry’s highly demanding future regulatory roadmap. Rafael then transferred to Shanghai where he served as LR’s Business Development Strategy Manager for the Greater China Area. His responsibilities in this post included effective liaison with relevant industry players for the strategic positioning of key development projects. He also assisted leading ship owners worldwide in resolving new ship building projects’ challenges across the Mainland. His other key tasks included LR’s Greater China consultancy business, client training and communications. After leading the Business Development and Consultancy Teams in China, Rafael moved to New York to take over as our Marine Business Development Manager for the USA, providing technical and business support, advice and solutions to all the stakeholders in the marine industry across the USA. During this time, he also acted as the secretary of LR’s North America Advisory Committee. In July 2016 Rafael relocated to Houston where he currently serves as our VP Business Development, leading the implementation of the business strategy for LR Marine & Offshore in the Americas Region. Rafael holds an MSc in Naval Architecture from Spain’s Technical University of Madrid and has studied Ship Design and Materials courses at the Technical University of Denmark. He has also qualified as a Chartered Engineer, a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and an associate member of SNAME.
