About the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Conference The conference was named after civil rights activist and legend, Whitney M. Young, Jr. Young served as the executive director of the National Urban League from 1961 to 1971 and was an advocate for equality and economic empowerment for all. The conference was first founded in 1973 as a half-day lecture series and has grown to a two-day event with hundreds of attendees, including students, professionals, alumni and corporate representatives from across the U.S all to network, collaborate and learn about issues related to Black experience.
