Full Overview
Digitisation is poised to power the green revolution, helping companies across sectors reduce their emissions, and kick-start the economy. For every 5% increase in access to digital technology, there is a corresponding CO2 reduction of 16%, according to GeSi.
Less is said, though, about the ability of the telecom & technology industry’s ability to cut back its own impact on the environment. BCG suggests, however, that they are responsible for 3-4% of the world’s CO2 emissions, twice that of the civil aviation sector.
With Europe’s leading ICT players committed to powering the Green Deal and accomplishing their own ESG objectives, are they themselves on track to reach net zero emissions by 2050 (or beforehand), break the link between resource usage and economic growth, and ensure the resulting benefits are available to all people and regions?
How can telecom operators and infrastructure owners move to renewable energy, develop power-efficient equipment, and manufacture high-quality, long-lasting materials? How long until we can rely on recycled or recyclable materials, reduce the dimensions of cables, and keep production in Europe to ensure high standards and reduce the carbon footprint?
The Financial Times, in partnership with Prysmian Group, was pleased to present this panel briefing for telecom, technology and infrastructure executives, institutions and investors across Europe. Drawing on guests’ expertise in sustainability innovation, we explored the next frontier of environmentally-friendly communications networks.
