Managing Conflict
ABOUT THE EVENT
The ability to manage conflict has always been a defining characteristic of successful leaders and it feels never more important than today. Understandably, conflict is often viewed as a negative. Yet it can also be a highly positive force in the context of Boards and Leadership teams to help drive transformation and value creation.
Conflicting objectives, ideas and personalities of diverse groups and individuals can be powerful stimulants to creativity and at the same time create a strong vaccine against “Group think”. However, if the dark side of conflict is allowed to build it can easily destroy hitherto successful organisations, reputations and careers.
Managing conflict so it remains constructive and avoids straying into the dark side is as much an art as a science. Highly effective leaders are able to achieve this through high levels of self and group awareness, through creating the right environment for positive creativity and knowing what the right response is with that issue on that day with those people in the room. They are also able to think out of the moment and see the specific issues in the context of an overall relationship and their goals for that relationship. All of which is easy to say but so much harder to do.
In this highly participative peer group session, led by experienced Chair and conflict specialist Patrick Dunne, we’ll look at understanding conflict situations, explore our instinctive approaches to conflict as well as look at some well proven approaches used by “Conflict Maestros”.
