Understand that through systemic and explicit reading instruction, the vast majority of children can learn to read;
Understand the Science of Reading, including seminal reading frameworks (e.g. National Reading Panel, the Simple View of Reading, Scarborough’s Rope, and Four-Part Processor);
Understand the development of the reading brain from 3rd trimester to literacy and the implications for language reading difficulties;
Be able to implement explicit and systematic reading instruction during the literacy block–in whole group and small groups–that support every child to becoming a proficient reader on a path to a deep reading brain;
Be able to design instruction to meet the needs of every learner;
Be able to analyze the selected curriculum or programs compared to the seminal frameworks above in order to adapt, supplement, enhance, and deepen Tier 1 and Tier 2 instruction for all children.

About the Rollins Center for Language & Literacy

Teach For America joins the Rollins Center for Language & Literacy in a shared mission to ensure literacy and justice. Through evidence-based practices across language development and the Science of Reading, Rollins and their partners aim to break the cycle of illiteracy and generational lack of access to educational opportunity across America.
To help fulfill this vision, the Rollins Center draws upon leading science-based research and the practices of the world’s preeminent child development experts to deliver professional training to educators through the Cox Campus – a free, universally accessible online learning community. The Cox Campus offers accredited coursework to build knowledge and expertise, as well as instructional practices and supportive materials for immediate use in schools and classrooms.
Program Track Overview
The team at Rollins Center for Language and Literacy will work with TFA educators to ensure that every student has access to grade-level content and texts, receives equitable literacy instruction as defined by the research, and that every student is reading at grade-level. This track will connect you with experts in literacy and research in the Science of Reading, share best practices in translating research to the classroom, and connect the learning to the curricular materials you use in your school and classroom. Rollins Center facilitators will lead a hybrid professional learning experience, including exclusive live, virtual professional discussion and training, and Science of Reading coursework on the free, self-paced Cox Campus online. The Cox Campus courses to be included in the professional development are as follows:

Over the 2-week professional learning experience, teachers will take several courses per week, with facilitated discussions, interactive workshops, review of current and evolving research/scholarly articles, modeling and supported classroom planning time. Reading unlocks life’s potential; it is the gateway to a life of self-determination. This training will prepare you for the year ahead, and to be a part of our shared movement to realize literacy and justice for all.
