Western Healthcare Alliance is excited to announce a new professional development Leadership Academy series in August 2022. This series is brought to us by Saybrook University and will be taught by their faculty. WHA’s CEO, Angelina Salazar serves as a trustee on their board.

This five-part series is designed to support mindfulness techniques to support increased presence and connectivity for leader’s personal and professional lives. Leaders will take away tools to help them be more adaptive and coping skills to navigate this era of persistent change. See below for individual session descriptions.

Session 1:  Mindfulness Meditation with Mind-body Medicine Experts Drs. Luann Fortune & Donald Moss
    August 8th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM

During this session, attendees will be led through the evidence-based benefits of mindfulness practices for health and well-being. Join us to learn how various practices can support leaders in the workplace and learn mindfulness exercises for experiential learning. Attendees will be introduced to the science of how mindfulness practices can enhance individual self-care and workplace experience, experience a brief mindfulness application, and assess immediate effects. At the conclusion of this session, attendees have the tools to achieve mindfulness and references for further use.

Session 2:  Addressing Burnout and Secondary Trauma with Dr. Trent Nguyen & Laurie Ellington
    August 11th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM

Do you know the difference burnout and secondary trauma? Join us for the session to learn more about research on the phenomena of burnout and secondary trauma. Attendees leave with the skills to recognize symptoms of burnout and secondary trauma, and ways to alleviate those symptoms in oneself and others. Attendees will also learn strategies to work with others who experience burnout and secondary trauma.

Session 3:  Adopting Self-care Strategies in Times of Stress with Drs. Megan Ratcliffe & Selene Vega
    August 15th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM

During this session, attendees will learn about the principles and ideas about stress and self-care. At the end of this session, attendees will be able to identify self-care approaches for responding to the challenges and stressors in our personal, professional, and collective lives. Acknowledging and expanding one's skills and experience with self-care connects us to strength and resilience and is the foundation for providing these strategies to others, as well as essential to the sustainability of our work and wellness.

Session 4:  Adaptive Leadership in the Pandemic Era, Part 1 with Drs. Megan Ratcliffe & Dorianne Cotter-Lockard
    August 16th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM

Join us for Part 1 of this session to learn how the Adaptive Leadership model works to shift mindsets and develop resilience to lead ongoing change. Participants will learn to challenge what feels familiar and explore new strategies to serve a greater purpose. Building environments of trust helps foster quality relationships and can strengthen practical application of adaptive leadership strategies. The first session of this 2-part course will present an interactive and engaging process to observe patterns, interpret what is going on, and design creative interventions.

Session 5:  Adaptive Leadership in Times of Crisis, Part 2  with Drs. Mary Kay Chess & Megan Ratcliffe
    August 18th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM

During Part 2 of this session participants will continue to build understanding on leading through anticipated events and the often-unintended outcomes. Practical application of the Adaptive Leadership approach will focus on the critical distinction between technical and adaptive opportunities while engaging diverse perspectives amidst complex challenges. In this consideration of adaptive leadership, the tools covered will include the openness to feedback, the readiness for inevitable change, and the nimbleness to pivot.
