    Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate

    Location: Cedar Rapids City Service Center, 500 15th Ave SW, Cedar Rapids

    Date: Wednesday, September 23 - 8 AM-4PM


    The Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate Program, one of APWA’s most popular programs, is targeted towards forepersons, supervisors, and managers of winter maintenance operations. This certificate program helps those in charge of winter operations understand all facets of developing and maintaining an effective winter maintenance program, resulting in more effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly snow and ice control.

    The program concentrates on the following areas:

    •  Policy & Planning
    •  Materials
    •  Weather
    •  Equipment
    •  Snow & Ice Control


    After completing this course, you will be better able to:

    1. Explain necessary steps of planning and preparation.
    2. Discuss winter weather and explain how it affects operations.
    3. Identify how to better use traditional and alternative chemicals.
    4. Consider what equipment is available and how to maintain it.
    5. Evaluate and utilize snow and ice control techniques.
    6. Describe the environmental impacts of winter maintenance policies.
    7. Utilize responsible application procedures.

    Winter Maintenance Operator Certificate

    Location: Kirkwood Iowa Hall, 7005 Tower Rd SW, Cedar Rapids

    Date: Wednesday, September 23 - 8 AM-12 PM


    This four-hour workshop provides a well-rounded overview of snow and ice control for those behind the wheel during snow operations. Participants receive a certificate of completion following the program. The program concentrates on the following areas, from an operator’s perspective:

    • Materials
    • Equipment Operations
    • Snow and Ice Control Operations


    After completing this course, participants will be better able to:

    1. Discuss the basics of winter operations and apply essential winter operations for operators.
    2. Identify common winter maintenance materials and how they work.
    3. Explain the different winter maintenance equipment available and its upkeep as well as determine the benefits of enhanced communication between fleet personnel and operators.

    OPTIONAL for Operator Certificate registrants: Snowplow Truck Defect Identification

    Sharpen your skills further by identifying 5 pre-determined defects on a snowplow truck.  The top 3 participants with the most correct answers will receive a gift card!

    Held 12-2 PM following the certificate course at the Kirkwood Continuing Education Training Center, 101 50th Ave SW, Cedar Rapids.  Participants are expected to drive themselves (5-minute drive) to this location.  


    Boxed lunch will be served at 12 PM at the Kirkwood Continuing Education Training Education Center, 101 50th Ave SW, Cedar Rapids.
