From the presidency of Richard Nixon through the campaign of Donald Trump, Philip Downs has been in the center of a family business, experiencing growth, business failures, great achievements and lessons that came at great cost. Downs, along with his brother, sold their construction company in 2016, bringing a 40-year family business to a conclusion. During those 40 years, Downs was instrumental in developing, growing and selling five companies that all sprang from an original Northern Virginia warehouse equipment business. Through a rugged “learn as you go” education and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, he saw success as the leader in a family enterprise. Today, he consults for family businesses, minority enterprises and government contractors in the Washington, D.C., area. He understands that family businesses can be richly rewarding but carry special risks and responsibilities. After selling his business, Downs moved to Shenandoah County, adjusting to a new lifestyle and pace. He continues to work with family businesses, lecturing and finding ways to give back to his community.
