From the presidency of Richard Nixon through the campaign of Donald Trump, Philip Downs has been in the center of a family business, experiencing growth, business failures, great achievements and lessons that came at great cost. Philip, along with one brother, sold their construction company in 2016 bringing a 40 year family business to a conclusion. During those 40 years, Mr. Downs was instrumental in developing, growing and selling five companies that all sprang from the original northern Virginia warehouse equipment business. Through a rugged “learn as you go” education and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Downs saw success as the leader in a family enterprise. Today, Philip does consulting work for family businesses, minority enterprises and government contractors in the Washington DC area. He understands that a family business can be richly rewarding, but carries special risks and responsibilities. After selling his main business, Mr. Downs moved to Shenandoah County adjusting to a new lifestyle and pace. He continues to work with family businesses, lecturing and finding ways to give back to the community.
