UNC CBE Summit 2017
CBE uses a different lens to measure student learning.
Competency-based education (CBE) models are focused around the student, not around the academic calendar. Join like-minded colleagues and peers for a day of continuing education to talk about the business processes and curricular redesigns that support more flexible educational programs. Instead of a program delivery model scheduled solely around seat time, CBE degree programs and certificates are organized around student mastery of content knowledge—and this becomes the crux of the change for business processes. Within the University of North Carolina public university system, there are currently four CBE pilots in development: two degrees at Winston Salem State University in the School of Health Sciences; a jointly developed and delivered Lateral Entry Teacher Certification through the Schools of Education at UNC Chapel Hill and NC State University; and finally, one degree-completion program at NC Central University in teacher education. The NC Community College system is also developing CBE degrees and programs, as are other partners in the SCRIP grant (Southeastern CBE Regional Innovation Partnership) funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Highlighting 16 concurrent sessions, Sandbox ColLABorative Executive Director Dr. Michelle Weise (co-author, Hire Education) will present the opening keynote. Also, always informative, insightful, and entertaining CBEN (CBE Network) Executive Director Charla Long will return again this year for a lunchtime keynote presentation. Representatives from the Southeast CBE Regional Innovation Partnerhip (SCRIP) funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will release results of a year-long effort to identify CBE substantive change issues with SACSCOC, arriving at a common language for CBE discussions. Leading up to the Summit, we will publish pre-conference information through a continuous learning platform under the hastag #CBE2017, and UNC Press will publish post-conference proceedings as both an open access digital product and a downloadable PDF.
Keynote Speakers
Michelle Weise
Executive Director, Sandbox Collaborative, Southern New Hampshire University
Michelle Weise, Ph.D., helps institutions and their leaders navigate the dynamics of disruption across a rapidly changing academic terrain.
Weise specializes in disruptive innovation in higher education. Her work informs policymakers, community leaders, academic administrators and innovators about how the theories of disruption clarify our understanding of the industry’s transformation. Weise’s seminal book – “Hire Education: Mastery, Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution,” co-authored with Clayton Christensen – unveils the tectonic shifts to come, and discusses how online competency-based education will revolutionize the workforce and disrupt higher education.
Beyond competency-based learning, Weise’s research delves into student-learning outcomes, assessments, and public-private partnerships.

UNC-TV Lightboard
UNC-TV will be demonstrating its Lightboard at the UNC CBE Summit! The Lightboard is used to record dynamic online videos. You simply draw on piece of glass using neon markers. You maintain eye contact with your viewers, and your writing glows in front of you. A camera "flips" the image allowing your writing (or inserted graphics) to appear normal to the viewer. A quick video demo can be found here.
To see the Lightboard in action at the UNC CBE Summit, stop by the Wintergreen room at 11am, 1pm, or 3pm!
COMPETENCY-BASED NURSING EDUCATION CONFERENCE: 'RN TO BSN- TO CBE OR NOT TO CBE'
In January 2016, the State Board of Community Colleges voted to support the recommendation from the Future of Community College Nursing Education Ad Hoc committee for a "collaborative development of a competency-based BSN completion program at one of the UNC System nursing schools." In September 2016, the North Carolina Community College System awarded the Division of Nursing at Winston-Salem State University a RN to BSN Competency-Based Education (CBE) Project Grant. The CBE Grant is funded from the state leadership portion of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006. Key components in redesigning the curriculum to the CBE model will be discussed.
Nurse educators and administrators of nursing programs must not only understand disciplinary content considerations in competency-based education (CBE) program redesign, but also have to understand CBE delivery models and teaching methodologies for effective student learning outcomes.
At this conference, nursing instructors and education leaders will gain a basic knowledge and understanding of competency-based education (CBE) models and the ability to develop a pilot project on their own campus.
