Climate Network Summit 2023

About the Climate Network Summit
The urgency of responding to climate change and its impact has rallied the scientific and technical community like few challenges before. Great progress has been made in understanding the climate system, however it is becoming increasingly clear that computational systems have been outpaced by the demands from climate change research. As it stands, we are struggling to harness the full potential of Earth observation and simulation information, especially as researchers seek to leverage AI for climate science. IBM Research is hosting the inaugural Climate Network Summit on January 18-19 at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. The goal is to bring together leaders from academia, public, governmental and industry sectors for an open exchange on the challenges, solutions, and technology innovations required to unlock the massive potential of climate data and information, and to accelerate the discovery of solutions to climate change by enabling a Climate Network — moving significantly beyond data standards and allowing platforms to interact intelligently. While there have been attempts to consolidate climate data into a single compute system, it is increasingly clear that the future of climate science will not rely on monolithic systems where all required information is within the same infrastructure or cloud. Rather, we need networked and federated systems that enable large scale federated querying, learning, and modeling between distributed nodes. We need efficient and affordable access to climate information and user-friendly workflow orchestration technologies to transform how we extract insights about our planet. The importance of these insights cannot be understated as they provide the scientific basis to support stakeholder decisions in government, industry, and politics. The summit will feature keynotes by technical leaders from government organizations and academic institutions, panel discussions, and breakout sessions. The event is meant as a platform for knowledge sharing, relationship building and nurturing an ecosystem that brings together all those for whom leading climate change research is a key priority.
