During the apocalypse, streets across the world were shut down in an effort to provide more space to pedestrians given social-distancing recommendations. Although temporary, many cities have seen the benefits of reduced pollution which begs the question: should we keep this up? Cities such as Paris, MIlan, Oakland., London hope to maintain a car-free future and do not want to revert back to pre-COVID times. However, given the fear of close contact and community spread, will we be seeing a rise in private car transport post-pandemic? What equity considerations must be taken if we are not replacing car-free space with strong and robust public transport networks to ensure essential workers remain mobile.
