Forensic Toxicological Investigation of Postmortem Cases: Novel LCMS and HRMS Analytical Approaches

    June 14, 2023

    1:00 PM EDT

Liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS) or high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) are powerful techniques in the identification of known and previously unknown drugs and their metabolites in forensic toxicological casework. Whether used in isolation or in combination, such methodologies can enable a comprehensive scope of drug detection while also achieving the sensitivities required to detect low-concentration analytes and meet testing needs. Postmortem toxicology has historically required these advantages, and more so now as the availability of new drugs continues to increase, including the most recent wave of novel psychoactive substances (NPS) being those with potent opioid activity. In this seminar, the practical use of these techniques, and the discussion of their advantages and limitations will be presented.
