Get to Know Jacksonville
Jacksonville is a city with a rich history. At 747 square miles, the city itself is the largest by area in the contiguous United States. In 1968, the city's boundaries grew to such a large size through a consolidation of the various smaller city governments with the county government. Our outsized boundaries are only overshadowed by the influential figures who have called Jacksonville home.
There is a significant collection of African-American historical sites as well as Timucuan historical sites in Jacksonville. Visitors to Jacksonville can explore some of this history by visiting The Ritz Theatre and Museum, the American Beach Museum, or the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve.
Our Youth & JaxPrism
Nearly one in five students who attend Duval County Public Schools identify as Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual or have same-gender sexual partners. Survey data from the CDC's biennial Youth Risk Behavior Survey show that our LGB students face discrimination from a young age and that our LGB students engage in risky behavior such as drug and alcohol use more frequently than their heterosexual counterparts.
JaxPrism, founded in 2015, is a group of education professionals who work together to change the narrative for our most vulnerable young people. The leadership of JaxPrism invites you to join us in Jacksonville this fall! We're eager to learn and lead alongside you.
