11:45am - 12:45pm Parallel Session 1b - Production
Tuesday Feb 13 - Bronte Room, 1st Floor, The Knowledge Centre

Description

Chair: Sian Chapman, Production & Editorial Manager, University of Wales Press

NEIL CLARKE: ' Future proofing the supply chain'
The traditional route of print runs and warehouses has changed beyond recognition in recent years, as scholarly publishing models adapt to changing levels of demand and new technologies. How are book and journal manufacturers adapting to meet the evolving needs of scholarly publishing? What challenges are emerging and what strategies are printers employing to meet these needs? Neil Clarke will present how CPI, the largest book printer in Europe, has embraced and integrated demands such as digitisation, distribution and global availability into their workflows. Neil will also offer insight into market trends and the strategies global academic publishers are employing to future proof their supply chain.

BRET FREEMAN: 'Enhancing the User Experience with a Solid Content Strategy'
In this presentation Bret will begin with a gentle introduction to XML and discuss why organisations should be thinking about it. As we see the growth of A.I., publishers should be aware of how these emerging technologies can be leveraged to not only enhance user experience, but also to effect bottom line revenue. As we look not only at A.I. but at open access and the potential effects of a split from the EU, creating enriched content will be more important than ever and getting ‘found’ is much more important than being ‘searchable’.

ANDY REDMAN: 'Content and the supply chain'
This presentation will look at how OUP is engaging with future content supply chains and how the Press needs to adapt workflows and skills. It will start with the way in which the Press has reviewed its publishing processes from commissioning and contracting, through the process of authoring and enriching content, and how content can be transformed into final files which are suitable for reuse in both print and digital channels. The aim is to share how OUP has been thinking about the challenges and opportunities involved in transforming the publishing process and will reflect on progress on current pilots and the implications for where, when, and how publishers add value.
