    Roundtable on Sustainable Aviation Fuel

In October 2021, the global air transport industry adopted a new long-term goal to address its climate change impact by committing to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The goal is both ambitious and challenging. It will require technological innovations, operation and infrastructure improvements, an increase in the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and strong support from governments and energy providers.

The challenge in the short term is that 65% of the emissions reduction pathway set forth by the industry will depend on the production and use of SAF, which is either not commercially developed in most countries or produced at a small scale across the Americas. Leveraging on the Summit of the Americas, on June 6, IATA will host a policy / media roundtable discussion about how states in the region can contribute to the goal of reaching net-zero in commercial aviation by 2050.

The event will allow the USG to showcase its own SAF efforts and encourage public and private sector partners to undertake similar commitments. The event's content will consist of a roundtable discussion to call upon governments to implement supportive policy commitments for technology deployment, infrastructure efficiency improvements, notably the energy transition to sustainable aviation fuels, and ensuring SAF is part of governments' energy transition strategies.
