Marcel Karnstedt-Hulpus received his Diploma (M.Sc.) from the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, and successfully finished his Ph.D. at the Databases & Information Systems Group of the Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany. After spending several exciting years in academic (DERI - Digital Enterprise Research Institute, National University of Ireland, Galway) and industrial (Bell Labs Ireland, Alcatel-Lucent) research, he made his move into the publishing industry. He currently works as Senior Data Architect in the IT & Production of the Database Research Group of Springer Nature. He is leading a team of data specialists, software engineers and domain experts responsible for designing, implementing and delivering the industry-strength data & software architecture of the department. This involves responsibilities spanning from data management, processing and retrieval techniques (relational, NoSQL, graphs and IR), over modeling and building of domain-specific database solutions, to cutting-edge data analytics and mining.
