Tire pollution is everywhere, unregulated, and problematic. While Dieselgate was due to some manipulated diesel vehicles, every vehicle on earth generates tire pollution, and heavier electric vehicles tend to generate even more of it.
Tires are the only vehicle part that hits the road, so they are highly complicated, mission-critical components, that are central to safety and performance. However, as tires wear, they emit particulate matter as well as micro- and nano-plastics into our air, soil, waterways, and oceans.
Much of a tire is derived from crude oil, so tire wear emissions share many similarities with tailpipe emissions – and many of the same problems, if not more. Left unaddressed and unregulated, increased tire pollution could become a significant unintended consequence of electric vehicles due to their greater weight and torque.
In this session, participants will learn the latest scientific evidence from California, the United Kingdom and Europe, that tire pollution is a growing environmental problem, and a major topic of concern. Workshop participants will also learn of future solutions to address tire pollution, further enhancing the positive impact of new mobility solutions.
