Rylend spent a few wild years as a professional poker player before settling into a more stable, but much slimier career as an author/screenwriter. He’s worked for a solid decade in Hollywood, developing film and television projects with Ridley Scott, Luc Besson, Penelope Cruz, and Academy Award Winning Director Fernando Trueba, among others. Rylend’s scripts have twice appeared on the Black List, an annual ranking of Hollywood’s best screenplays as voted by top studio and film executives. In 2009, Total Film called his script The Ghost and the Wolf one of the top 50 unproduced scripts in Hollywood. Rylend has published a number of short stories, many of which are currently being developed for film/TV. The film rights to his story THIEF COACH were sold to Justin Lin (FAST & FURIOUS movies, STAR TREK III). He recently finished writing the filmic adaptation for Lin to direct. His story, BOTANY BAY, was just set up with F. Gary Gray attached to direct in the wake of his STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON success. And his story SMUGGLERS is being developed for television by director/producer Matt SHAKMAN (FARGO, GAME OF THRONES). Rylend holds a B.A. in Film and Art History from the University of Michigan and an M.F.A. from the American Film Institute Conservatory. He also happens to be a Soto Zen priest in the lineage of Gudo Nishijima and Brad Warner.
