Born and raised by two Anishnabe parents on the Garden River First Nation near Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, Dave Jones, the second of four children, is of Ojibwe ancestry, and grew up with his traditional Indigenous culture and language. He knew he was of Loon clan, and his spirit name of "Mishiikehn"(Turtle) since he was a lil boy, and that pride reflects in his business name, Turtle Concepts, which he opened in '99. Growing up with a strong cultural identity has assisted Dave to speak and teach how important that was to his level of confidence being so healthy. Attending ceremonies with his mom, and going to church with his dad, Dave was taught the beauty of the teachings and they always were connected by his mother. Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility and Truth were day to day teachings that became a lifestyle for him, and he began to speak about these as a young man. He actively lives his culture, promotes education, served on Council in his First Nation, and continues to connect the beauty of having a strong Anishnabe identity to universal skill sets that he was taught by many. He obtained a BA in Sociology, as well as a Bachelor of Education with a concentration in the Primary/Junior level. He taught Senior Kindergarten, high school and in the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. In 1999, Dave formally left teaching to open Turtle Concepts so he could teach confidence in all its facets and inspire changes to last a lifetime. Dave's deep knowledge of his Indigenous culture coupled with his education allows him to teach contemporary skills and methodologies that combine to create modern, fun yet culturally relevant sessions to address life promotion, gang awareness, drug and alcohol awareness, confidence building strategies, anti-bullying prevention, pre-natal engagement, life skills, employment readiness, career skills, parenting sessions, and professional development for staff in daycares, schools, boards, and more. Dave has been able to touch numerous lives and promotes the "good life that was shown to him", and always with guest co-facilitators of all ages who share their life story in his sessions. He is living proof that "it is okay to be yourself" and "to hold your head up high!" He is a shining example of perseverance, resiliency, and confidence with a positive and happy cultural identity... and for his whole life! He is an award-winning & highly enthusiastic motivational speaker, author, professional photographer who has launched several major poster campaigns, a musician, storyteller, emcee, consultant, designer, fashion director, choreographer, makeup artist, stylist, counsellor, teacher and most of all, a strong advocate for promoting healthy lifestyles. Dave continues to connect people with humour, games, stories, conversations, discussions at conferences, retreats, workshops, sessions, etc.
