The Paradox of the Automation Market: Barriers to Growth Despite High Need
Metrology and machine vision technologies are irreplaceable building blocks in the world of industrial automation. The persistent shortage of skilled workers, combined with constant cost pressure, is forcing the manufacturing industry to increasingly automate its processes. So, this should be a boom time for automation equipment vendors. However, this is not the case, at least not across the board. David Löh, editor-in-chief of inspect, and Dr. Ronald Müller, managing director of Vision Markets, discuss the reasons for this, the direction in which measurement technology and machine vision are developing and which application markets will be the most promising, together with their guests from Wenglor: Fabian Baur, managing director, and Patrick Oelze, head of marketing.

Advantages of Two-photon Polymerization with Scalable Replication
The Fraunhofer IPT is developing a production technology that combines the advantages of two-photon polymerization with scalable replication. This makes it possible to produce high-precision microstructures that can control optical properties - efficiently and in large quantities. This opens up new optical functions and a wide range of applications for optics. To validate the structure, high-speed imaging is required. With High-Speed-Microscopy, large-area objects can be acquired in a very short time on a microscopic scale. Although the process is already around 30 times faster than comparable stop-and-go methods, the Fraunhofer IPT is working on accelerating the recording process even further. To this end, in addition to constantly improving the software, new components are regularly integrated, such as flash illumination, sensor technology for the hardware autofocus system, and camera technology.

Manufacturing measurements and uncertainty
This presentation will describe measurement instruments applied in manufacturing environments, from calipers to coordinate measuring machines to x-ray computed tomography systems. After providing a survey of instruments, common metrology terms will be defined using international standards, including accuracy, error, uncertainty, resolution, repeatability, and reproducibility. Common misuses of these terms will be summarized. Finally, an example uncertainty analysis will be detailed. The combined standard uncertainty for a density measurement of an aluminum block will be calculated, including the uncertainty contributors due to the mass measurement by a digital scale and length measurements by calipers.

A Comparative analysis of Precision Measurement Systems: CMMs vs. Structured Blue Light Systems
This presentation will explore the advantages, use-cases, and disadvantages associated with contact and non-contact precision measurement systems. Systems explored include probe CMMs, laser scanning, and structured blue light scanning. As each system is introduced, we will explore some of the basic operating principles, the capabilities of each system, as well as where one might utilize these systems in industries. The presentation will also discuss some ongoing research activities associated with structured blue light scanning.
