When Does Personalization Overreach into Privacy?
About the Event
Companies are constantly facing the challenge of being relevant to their customers (mostly consumers) yet at the same time not intruding into their privacy. We also need to worry about security of our personal data, be it our pictures or our medical records or our travel habits etc. We live in a time when the NSA is drawing everyone's ire for eavesdropping on phone conversations and at the same time startups are breaking new ground in targeting audiences for personalized offers, like knowing where you are in a mall and providing you updates on what might interest you. So, where does one draw the line? Is it location awareness that's scaring people? Or is it the entity gathering this information that's scary? For example, people seem to be less worried that a mobile app is collecting their whereabouts and identities but more worried about the government doing the same! In this session, our expert group of panelists will tell us about how today's technology leaders are working carefully to set the precedent for the right amount of personalization without compromising users' privacy and security. What are their guiding principles? And what are the types of technologies helping adhere to these principles? And, most importantly, where is the opportunity for new startups/technology?
