    La Goyco - https://www.lagoyco.org/

On the Day of Service Group 1 will start their day at La Goyco, a project developed by the community and for the community located at the former Pedro G. Goyco School in Santurce. La Goyco, located on Calle Loíza, the heart of Machuchal neighborhood, a historically Black community where old and new residents say that quality of life is under threat from increasing tourism and rising rents that are pushing out long-time residents, who happen to be mainly elderly people and low-income families.

Mariana Reyes/La Goyco will then introduce local researcher, historian, and La Goyco Board Member, Dr. Lester Nurse who will be talking to the group about the rich, and often unspoken, Black history of Santurce’s sub-barrio Machuchal.

Casa de La Plena Guided Visits- La Goyco houses La Casa de la Plena, a small museum-like project space dedicated to the documentation, archive, and  discussions about the Plena, its history, its legacy, and creation. The project is directed by musician and historian Hector “Tito” Matos, one of the best requinteros (requinto players) one of the top five plena singers in Puerto Rico, also based in the community.

It is strongly recommended that all participants wear comfortable clothes and shoes, a hat, or an umbrella for sun protection. Normal temperatures during the day might be higher than usual.
