2018 SOMOS Conference
About The Event
SOMOS, Inc., is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization committed to addressing the needs of the Hispanic population of New York State in collaboration with the NYS Assembly/Senate Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force . Our conferences, held twice yearly, serve as a platform for legislators, scholars, business and labor leaders to address various concerns pertinent to this community. Thought-provoking workshops on key issues, such as business development, health, and education, recruit support on new and existing legislation aimed to address the needs of the Hispanic population of New York. Additionally, SOMOS, Inc. uses the funds collected through these conferences to empower youths with scholarships that encourage furthering their education; college internships to promote retention; and apprenticeships to introduce newly graduated adults into the public, nonprofit, labor, and private sectors. The organization aims to create opportunities for Hispanic youth that will facilitate their professional development, growth, and future success.
La Bienvenida/Welcome Reception
Connect with our newly arrived SOMOS Conference guests at the Renaissance Hotel for our welcoming network reception. We will be joined by NYS Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie, Chairman Marcos A. Crespo and the members of the NYS Assembly/Senate Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force for the SOMOS Conference Kick-Off.
Senior Summit & Luncheon
The SOMOS Senior Summit is an all-day free public event that serves as a strong platform to address the issues affecting the Latino community in this State. The event has taken place every year since 1987 when several Latino leaders traveled to the state capital for what was then known as Hispanic/Latino Legislative Day.
Our Summit takes place on the first day of the conference and takes place at the Empire State Convention Center in Albany. Over 1,100 Seniors attended this year’s SOMOS Senior Summit event, which includes panel presentations, remarks from the Hon. Marcos Crespo, and other distinguished Legislators, a luncheon hosted by NYS Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. and NYS Assemblyman Victor Pichardo with special guest speakers, and a cultural event at the end of the day. Additionally, the Seniors enjoy the booth exhibitions which include Health care organizations and agencies.
Collegiate Summit
In an effort to help diversify the labor and management of Corporate America, local and state government workforces; SOMOS in collaboration with SUNY, CUNY and private colleges will host the 2nd Annual SOMOS Collegiate Summit!
The purpose of the Summit is to discuss the issues that are most important to college students: How to get a job after graduation? The Summit will be an open discussion with members of corporate America and elected officials on how to get your foot in the door and climb the corporate ladder after graduating college.
Workshops & Forums
Labor Breakfast
Join the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), union leaders, activists and elected officials held annually during our Conference to an overflow audience. The breakfast generates significant interest, which allows labor to promote its issues and organizing agenda to a wide and influential audience. The goal of this breakfast is to raise awareness of labor issues and motivate participants to take action. Since its inception in 1972, LCLAA has remained a grassroots organization driven and directed by Latino labor leaders who understand the importance of unionization in helping workers secure rights and protections on the job, empowering them to become voices for justice and change in their communities.
