Reykjanes Peninsula & the Blue Lagoon
Last year the first eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula in about 800 years happened after months of earthquakes and much speculation whether an eruption would happen. Now this area provides us with a unique opportunity to study the geological mysteries of the region!
This tour starts in front of Harpa where you will meet your professional local guide before heading towards the otherworldly Reykjanes Peninsula. The first stop of the day will be at Kleifarvatn Lake, the largest lake in the peninsula, said to be the home of a mythical sea monster. The next stop will be close by at the Seltún Geothermal Area where you will be able to witness mudpots, fumaroles and minerals deposited from geothermal solutions that provide colorful sediments.
Continuing the journey to Geldingadalir, the newest volcanic eruption in Iceland that lasted for 6 months straight. Here you get to hike up to the volcano and experience the brand-new dramatic lava field.
After the volcano hike, the tour will continue through the fishing town of Grindavík before going to the Blue Lagoon. A 2-course lunch will be served inside the Blue Lagoon at the LAVA restaurant. After lunch everyone will get to go into the lagoon for a relaxing swimming experience. The Blue Lagoon experience includes a Comfort entrance with use of towel, silica mask, as well as 1 drink of own choice from the lagoon bar. After the bathing experience, the tour will return to Reykjavik.

Glaciers and Climate Change
The Arctic and Sub-Arctic is home to several glaciated regions, located in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Russia, and the Nordic region. Rapid melting and retreat of glaciers and ice caps in those regions is now occurring in response to global warming, which is amplified at higher latitudes. Mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet has been the single largest contributor to global sea level rise since 1993 and future melting of the ice sheet could raise global sea-level by 7 meters.
Iceland’s glaciers and ice caps are among the best-studied in the world. This excursion offers participants a unique opportunity to visit a glacier and learn about the relationship between climate change and glacier extent, with a specific focus on the glaciers of Iceland, Greenland, and the Third Pole.
