Revealing What Matters: Scalable 3D Analysis for Drug Formulation and Delivery

    Free Virtual Event

    June 9th 4pm CEST, 2026

    About the Event

In pharmaceutical development and manufacturing, drug formulation is essential to optimizing the delivery, bioavailability, efficacy, and safety of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Solid dosage forms such as tablets represent complex, heterogeneous systems in which APIs, coatings, and excipients interact across multiple length scales. The internal three-dimensional structure of these systems plays a critical role in determining drug release behavior and overall product performance.

A comprehensive understanding of these structures is key to formulation development, process optimization, and regulatory-compliant quality assurance. However, conventional analytical and quality control methods are often limited to surface inspection or destructive sectioning, restricting the ability to analyze internal features while preserving spatial context and sample integrity.

At the same time, increasing data volumes, multiple users, and diverse imaging systems present challenges for scaling analysis workflows. Classical intensity-based segmentation approaches are often inconsistent, require manual adjustment, and struggle to accurately resolve complex or heterogeneous structures, limiting reproducibility and throughput.

This webinar introduces non-destructive 3D X-ray microscopy and flexible, scalable analysis with ZEISS arivis as an enabling technology for pharmaceutical material and formulation analysis. By providing high-resolution visualization of intact samples, it allows detailed characterization of critical features such as API distribution, coating thickness, porosity, and excipient dispersion, supporting a deeper understanding of formulation structure and performance.

A key focus will be on AI-powered segmentation, which overcomes the limitations of traditional methods by enabling robust, reproducible, and automated identification of structures of interest. By reducing manual intervention, minimizing user bias, and improving performance across heterogeneous datasets, AI supports scalable, high-throughput analysis across users and systems.

Leveraging advanced image analysis and data management capabilities, ZEISS solutions enable segmentation, particle analysis, quantification, and centralized workflows, supporting a seamless transition from research and development to scalable quality control.

Join us to discover how 3D imaging and analysis can enhance formulation understanding, accelerate process optimization, and support the development of safe, effective, and high-quality pharmaceutical products.

    Highlights of the webinar:

    • Understanding how internal microstructure impacts drug performance, bioavailability, and safety
    • How AI-powered 3D analysis enables reliable identification of APIs, coatings, and excipients
    • Scalable workflows for segmentation, particle analysis, and centralized data management with ZEISS Solutions
