Amber Charter School was founded in 2000 as the first Latino-led charter school in New York State by the Community Association of Progressive Dominicans (ACDP), a community-based organization. Amber Charter School serves students in three locations, East Harlem, Kingsbridge and now Inwood. 

All students receive instruction in Spanish as a second language from kindergarten until they graduate in eighth grade. Special education services include counseling, speech, a special education teacher,  occupational therapy, and access to physical therapy off campus. The South Bronx Charter School for International Cultures and the Arts implements an interdisciplinary curriculum that provides hands-on, active learning experiences for students to develop language proficiency in English and Spanish language.   The second language is integrated across all content areas, allowing students to continuously and consistently build on language skills while learning content.  Dual language instruction provides students with a systematic set of supports that strengthen their oral and written language development regardless of their proficiency level via classroom environment, essential vocabulary, and visuals.
